Again, because you would stream lots of videos, the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) has been built to handle the power needs of a top-notch tablet thanks to its very outstanding long-lasting 9720 mAh battery – and this is by far the finest on our list of best of tablets.

Some tablets on our list (Huawei MediaPad M5, chiefly) have great sounds, but none can match the sound produced by the iPad Pro’s left and right speakers. The speakers are superb and breathtaking!

We love the fact that you can just attach the Apple Pencil which is sold individually to the iPad Pro for charging and even storage. Using the Apple Pencil feels even better than using a pen and paper to take notes. Remember: you can’t use the new Apple Pencil with previous Apple tablet models. In the same vein, previous Apple Pencils are not compatible with the new iPad Pro 2018.

Whether you are an artist or not, you will certainly love Apple’s Procreate app. Another interesting thing to note is that transferring items from an iPhone or iPad to the new Apple iPad Pro 12.9 is so, so fast and can be done effortlessly.

Face ID is very responsive.

What you may not like

It is very expensive; but go for it because it is the best tablet you can ever lay your hands on at the moment and well worth every penny.

No headphone jack. Nevertheless you can use Apple’s new USB-C to 3.5 mm jack adapter to connect your old headphones to the new USB Port.

It uses a different type of charger.  You can’t use your previous Apple charging cables to charge the iPad Pro.

2. Samsung Galaxy Tab S4

  • Responsive stylus
  • Laudable display
  • Good battery life

  • Delicate
  • Pricey

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 – Key Specifications

  • Display: 10.5-inch HDR Super AMOLED display, 2560 x 1600 pixels
  • Chipset: Snapdragon 835 processor

  • Rear Camera: 13-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  8-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 7300 mAh

If you are an Android enthusiast, then this is best tablet pick for you. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the best Android-powered tablet on sale.

One outstanding feature of the Galaxy Tab S4 is the 10.5-inch 2560 x 1600 Super AMOLED display which is crystal clear with very sharp colours. Camera and sound from 4 speakers are excellent, too. The sound gets even better when you turn on the Dolby Atmos.  Pictures and videos taken indoors and outdoors are natural and clear.

Though not as expensive as the Apple iPad Pro 12.9, its hardware is very robust. The face recognition/iris scanner works well even with your glasses on.

It has a 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage option. For a couple of dollars more, you possibly will get the 256 GB version. There is a USB-C port, OTG (On the Go), a headphone jack and a MicroSD card for extra storage. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo OS, and you get an S Pen with it for writing.

It has a dual band WiFi radio that connects effortlessly to 2.4 and 5 GHz routers.

As is the norm with most high-end gizmos, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is fast and can handle several apps running concurrently without a drop in speed. Video streaming, YouTube, Facebook all function superbly. It is a great tablet for note taking and drawing.

It has a blue light filter which decreases digital eye strain, so your eyes won’t feel so tired. The Galaxy Tab S4 7300 mAh battery which is a considerable improvement on the Galaxy Tab S3’s 6000 mAh  battery lasts all day with heavy use and full brightness, and 3-4 days with minimal usage.

Samsung DeX feature which was first introduced with Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ allows you to use your tablet like a PC or laptop screen.

What you may not like

No fingerprint scanner, even though it has face recognition technology and iris scanner.

It is very pricey.

3. Apple iPad 9.7 (2018)

  • Good display
  • Reasonable price
  • Powerful iOS
  • Good battery life

  • Camera isn’t fantastic
  • Same old design

Apple iPad 9.7 (2018) – Key Specifications

  • Display: 9.7-inch IPS LCD screen, 1536 x 2048 pixels
  • Chipset: Apple A10 Fusion
  • Operating System: iOS 11.3
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Storage: 32GB, or 128GB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, hotspot
  • Size: 9.45 x 6.67 x 0.30 inches (240 x 169.5 x 7.5 mm)
  • Weight: 1.03 pounds (469 g)
  • Rear Camera: 8-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  1.2-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 8827 mAh

The Apple iPad 9.7 is a smaller and  budget-friendly version of the iPad Pro 12.9. Its screen is obviously smaller: 9.7 inches vis-a-vis the iPad Pro’s 12.9 inch display.

Being a mid-range tablet, it has a lower processing capability, meaning it is not as super fast as the iPad 12.9. The iPad 9.7 uses iOS 11.3. Its speed – powered by Apple’s A10 Fusion processor – is no less than most iPads older than the iPad Air 2.

The screen resolution is 2048 x 13536 pixels is OK but is not as excellent as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Super AMOLED display or the iPad Pro’s beautiful display.

The Apple iPad 9.7 comes with a 32 GB or 128 GB storage and 2 GB of RAM. Speakers and camera (1.2 megapixels on the front and 8 megapixels on the rear) aren’t also as good as those on the iPad Pro – they are not bad either. The sound is not out of the ordinary.

Because of its 9.7- inch size, it can easily fit into bags and is pretty easy to hold.

It has a 3.5 mm headphone jack unlike the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 which lacks one.

Similar to most Apple products, it has an excellent battery life (about 11 hours). If you want a fast, light, thin, mid-range tablet with iOS operating system, the Apple iPad 9.7 is a must-pick.

What you may not like

Battery life is not as exceptional as the Apple iPad Pro 12.9’s battery life.

4. Amazon Fire HD 10

  • Affordable price
  • Impressive screen
  • Alexa is useful
  • Excellent performance

  • Body made of plastic
  • Camera isn’t fantastic

Amazon Fire HD 10 – Key Specifications

  • Display: 10.10-inch screen, 1920 x 1200 pixels
  • Chipset: Mediatek MT8173
  • Operating System: Customized Android 5.1,  Fire OS

  • Weight: 1.11 pounds (504 g)
  • Rear Camera: 2-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  Yes
  • Battery: 3830 mAh

We mentioned earlier that even with a little cash to spare, getting a good tablet shouldn’t be a problem. One good slate which is quite budget-friendly without compromising quality is the Amazon Fire HD 10. It is an Android-powered tablet that uses Android 5.1.

The Fire HD 10 has a 10.1 inch screen size and 2 GB of RAM. Its battery strength (3830 mAh),which allows you roughly 10 hours of use and 2 megapixel camera are not so bad for a cheap, efficient tablet. It is either you go for the 32 GB or the 64 GB internal storage.

We must add that you are limited to some apps since you cannot access Google Play Store to add more apps to your tablets. You will also not be able to use Gmail and watch your favorite YouTube videos. That said, you can use apps like Facebook and Netflix.

What you may not like

No Google Play Store Access; this means you will be restricted to a number of apps.

5. Microsoft Surface Pro 6

  • Impressive display
  • Excellent performance
  • Good battery life

  • Pricey
  • No USB-C

Microsoft Surface Pro 6 – Key Specifications

  • Display: 12.3-inch LCD screen, 2736 x 1824 pixels
  • Chipset: Intel Core i5 or i7 (8th Gen)
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home
  • RAM: 8GB/16GB
  • Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • Size: 11.5 x 7.9 x 0.33 inches (292 x 201 x 8.5 mm)
  • Weight: 1.70 pounds (770 g), or 1.73 pounds (784 g)
  • Rear Camera: 8-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  5-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 5940 mAh

If you want all the functions of Windows 10 coupled with everything a tablet can do, then go for the Surface Pro 6. It can serve as a tablet as well as a laptop.

It comes with several internal storage variants depending on your budget and needs. The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 has 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB storage options. You can go for the 8 GB RAM with Core i5 or 16 GB RAM with Core i7. All versions come preinstalled with Windows 10 Home.

The display and performance are a lot better than that on the Surface Pro 4. Its display resolution – 2736 x 1824 pixels – is gorgeous and first-rate. You can get roughly 6 to 7 hours of battery life depending on the applications you are running. Using the battery save mode and the suggested brightness settings will make the battery last a day or more.

The Surface Pro 6 is very lightweight and slim, and the audio quality is better than what you would find on most tablets; it is pretty loud and very, very clear.  Despite the fact that the Surface Pro 6 has no built-in fan, it rarely gets warm even while running power-intensive applications.

It has four ports: a USB-A port, a headphone jack, a mini DisplayPort and a surface connect port. Surprisingly, the Surface Pro 6 has no USB-C port. It has a MicroSD slot concealed under the kickstand.

Basic tasks like using Microsoft Office related programs, surfing the web, taking notes, streaming videos and more importantly programs like Photoshop and Revit can be done on Surface Pro 6. It is also great for light gaming.

Face recognition for unlocking the device is fast and responsive.

We recommend getting a keyboard to go with this device. If you would take notes and draw on the Surface Pro 6, then you need a pen as well.

What you may not like

The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 has no USB-C port. We don’t see this as a big issue. You could get a USB-C to USB-A adapter if you must connect your USB-C devices to the tablet.

The Surface Pro 6 Windows 10 tablet mode requires a great deal of development.

The on-screen keyboard is not super responsive.

6. Amazon Fire HD 8

  • Useful hands-free Alexa integration
  • Very affordable
  • Impressive show mode
  • Solid build

  • Average battery life
  • Sluggish navigation

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2018) – Key Specifications

  • Display: 8-inch IPS LCD HD screen, 1280 x 800 pixels
  • Chipset: MediaTek MT8163
  • Operating System: Android 7.1.2, Fire OS
  • RAM: 1.5GB
  • Storage: 16GB or 32GB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • Size: 8.4 x 5.0 x 0.4 inches (214 x 128 x 9.7 mm)
  • Weight: 0.80 pounds (363 g)
  • Rear Camera: 2-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  2-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 4750 mAh

Like the Surface Pro 6, the Fire HD 8 boasts a decent display (1280 x 800 pixels) with excellent colour.

It is durable and very easy to use.

When it comes to speed (uses a 1.3 GHz Mediatek quad-core processor), and battery life (6 to 7 hours), this tablet ticks all the boxes. You won’t experience any lags when performing small tasks. Most apps on the Fire HD 8 load pretty fast. The battery lasts even longer if all you do with the tablet is surf the web and read.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is slightly less expensive than the Amazon Fire HD 10. With a screen size 2 inches smaller than the Fire HD 10, you get everything the Fire HD 10 offers. But note that you Google-related apps like YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps and the like are absent on the Fire HD 10. That said, you can access web version of Youtube. To download apps, you have to go to Amazon’s own app store which has fewer apps than Google’s app store.

It is shipped with 32 GB of storage. There are slots for two SIM cards and a microSD that can take up to 400 GB of external storage. You can make and receive phone calls on this tablet.

The speakers (which you would find on the left side) produce fairly reasonable loud sound, but lack bass.

Amazon’s Fire HD 8 has two cameras: a two-megapixel camera on the rear and one in front for video calls. The two cameras are anything but great.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 is for performing light activities like watching videos, checking social media accounts such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, as well as streaming TV shows.

Overall, it is a great mid-range tablet which uses Android 8.1 Oreo. If you need a reasonably priced tablet that works great, then the Fire HD 8 is a must-buy.

Want an improved version of the Fire HD 8 or a better alternative? A few more dollars will get you the Fire HD 10 with a better processor and screen resolution. Or, better yet, try Apple iPad 9.7 (2018).

What you may not like

Its two-megapixel rear camera could be better. So as you would expect, the pixels are too low – and not as great as what Apple iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 offer. But that is reasonable for a low budget tablet.

Like the Microsoft Surface Pro 6, there is no USB-C charging port.

Viewing angles are not top-notch. You have to view the tablet directly to get the best viewing experience.

7. Apple iPad Air (2019)

  • Cutting-edge display
  • Excellent performance
  • Responsive OS
  • Excellent battery life

  • No design improvements

Apple iPad Air (2019) – Key Specifications

  • Display: 10.5-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen, 2224 x 1668 pixels
  • Chipset: Apple A12 Bionic chip
  • Operating System: iOS 12.1.3
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Storage: 64GB/256GB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, hotspot
  • Size: 9.87 x 6.85 x 0.24 inches (250.6 x 174 x 6.1 mm)
  • Weight: 1.05 pounds (476 g)
  • Rear Camera: 8-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  7-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 8134 mAh

Apple has always won the tablet race. The Apple iPad Air is no exception. This tablet is one the best iPads that isn’t a iPad Pro.

It is lightweight, thin and comes in handy for simple tasks like reading, using the internet and streaming videos. It is also great for taking notes with the Apple Pencil.

The Apple iPad Air can boast the same battery life as Pro iPads. It is also super fast as it utilizes Apple’s A12 processor with 3 GB of RAM.

The iPad Air has more than enough memory: 64 GB or 256 GB storage space. The choice is yours.

Good price, speed, excellent performance and portability are some of the hallmarks of the iPad Air.

What you may not like

One trivial drawback is that the left and right bezels are so small; you may accidentally tap something on the screen.

Camera could be better.

8. Microsoft Surface Go

  • Excellent display
  • Good design
  • Affordable price
  • Decent performance and speed

  • Not as good as Apple tablets
  • Average battery life

Microsoft Surface Go – Key Specifications

  • Display: 10-inch display, 1800 x 1200 pixels
  • Chipset: Intel Pentium 4415Y
  • Operating System: Windows 10
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 128GB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band
  • Size: 9.65 x 6.89 x 0.33 inches (245 x 175 x 8.3 mm)
  • Weight: 1.15 pounds (522 g)
  • Rear Camera: 8-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  5-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 3411 mAh

With the Microsoft Surface Go, you get most of the features present in the Surface Pro. The Surface Go is cheaper than the Surface Pro.

You can watch Netflix, surf the web and more importantly carry out all MS Office-related tasks on the surface Go. It can handle any light task than can be done on a typical Windows 10 PC. Because it utilizes Windows OS, apps can be installed from the Windows store facilitated by the preinstalled Windows S which can be updated to Windows 10 or Windows 10 Pro.

The Surface Go is a portable and sturdy tablet which can also double as a PC with a keyboard attached. You can write and draw on its surface. Be ready to download a few updates when you first use the device.

The display is excellent for the price – don’t expect an Apple iPad Pro-like screen!

With regard to speed and performance, this tablet is just OK. It is not as lightening fast as the Apple iPad Pro 12.9, Apple iPad 9.7, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4. You will only notice the not-so-fast speed if you have ever used high-end tablets in the past. Opening multiple browser tabs or apps will make it lag somewhat.

You can play games (light games, of course) on the device, but it is best suited for small tasks like surfing the web, reading ebooks, checking mails, editing tasks on the go as the name suggests.

It has a USB-C port and a port for speakers and headphones. It is shipped with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 64 GB of internal storage.

The bezels are just perfect for holding the tab when the keyboard isn’t there. You don’t want to worry about accidentally tapping something on the screen.

Like some reasonably priced tablets out there, the Microsoft Surface Go battery will not last the whole day if you are constantly streaming videos and playing music. To get the most from the battery each day, we recommend using its battery saving mode and setting the screen brightness to its darkest.

If you’ve always wanted a productive, flexible, handy desktop alternative, without compromising efficiency, then the Microsoft Surface Go is easily the way to go.

What you may not like

The Surface Go has a limited number of apps.

You may not be able to listen to music when the Surface Go’s screen is off as you would on a smartphone.

The bezels are a slightly wider (for a reason) than what you see on other tablets.

Accessing features on the surface go is impossible without first unlocking it.

Pen, keyboard are not shipped with the Surface Go. You have to purchase them separately.

9. Apple iPad Mini (2019)

  • Very, very good performance and speed
  • Excellent battery life
  • Crisp and colourful display
  • Lots of apps
  • Good OS

  • No new design tweak
  • RAM size can be improved
  • Has thick bezels

Apple iPad Mini (2019) – Key Specifications

  • Display: 7.9-inch display, 1536 x 2048 pixels
  • Chipset: Apple A12 Bionic chip
  • Operating System: iOS 12.1.3
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Storage: 64GB/256GB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band
  • Size: 8.0 x 5.31 x 0.24 inches (203.2 x 134.8 x 6.1 mm)
  • Weight: 0.66 pounds (300.5 g)
  • Rear Camera: 8-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  7-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 5124 mAh

The iPad Mini 2019 version is for anyone who needs a very portable iOS-powered tablet. Like most iPads the new iPad Mini is sleek. But this is not why we love the tablet. Its outstanding processing speed which is made possible by the Apple A12 bionic chip makes it standout from other tablets and that is why we love it. Apps on the new 2019 iPad Mini run pretty fast without hiccups.

It is shipped with 3GB RAM and has 64GB and 256GB storage options. This storage is enough to store your movies, pictures, and other files.

With a beautiful LCD capacitive screen, and a True Tone display which fine-tunes the screen to suit the lighting conditions wherever you are using the device, your eyes won’t suffer from strains as a result of screen lightening. Since the tablet is small and lightweight, carrying it around for reading books, taking notes and surfing the web won’t be a problem.

The 2019 IPad Mini has a 4G variant, which makes internet connection and download speeds a lot faster.

If you love taking pictures, the iPad Mini 2019 has a 7-megapixel selfie camera, and an 8-megapixel HDR rear camera. Gold, Silver, and Space Gray are colour variants of the iPad on the market at the moment.

The battery life of the new iPad Mini 2019 is excellent. You can get up to 10 hours of productive work out of the tablet on a single charge.

What you may not like

One minor drawback is that the Apple iPad Mini has no Face ID recognition technology.

The 2019 iPad Mini design isn’t particularly different from the previous version.

10. Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4

  • Impressive speakers
  • Very good performance
  • Decent battery life
  • Good display

  • Average camera
  • No headphone jack

Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4 – Key Specifications

  • Display: 8.4-inch IPS LCD touchscreen, 2560 x 1600 pixels
  • Chipset: HiSilicon Kirin 960s
  • Operating System: Android 8.0 (Oreo)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Storage: 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band
  • Size: 8.37 x 4.91 x 0.29 inches (212.6 x 124.8 x 7.3 mm)
  • Weight: 0.70 pounds (316 g)
  • Rear Camera: 13-megapixel camera
  • Front Camera:  8-megapixel camera
  • Battery: 5100 mAh

Huawei has succeeded in making a tablet that is sleek, durable and elegant. The display is great but not as good as what you will get from some high-end tablets. This tablet has 64 GB storage, 4 GB RAM and a MicroSD slot. There are 4GB and 128GB variants.

The MediaPad M5 which utilizes Android 8.0 (a phone version) has a very good battery life – about 7 to 8 hours when streaming videos. The battery life is one of the selling points of this tablet.

The 8.4-inch tablet has four speakers with excellent amplifiers designed to give you nothing but the best sounds. You’d be surprised by the sound quality of this tablet – it is simply outstanding.

If you read a lot even at night, then the ‘eye comfort’ mode lets you read without straining your eyes.

The fingerprint reader works very well, too and is extremely responsive. It is better than what most top-tier tablets and phones offer. The fingerprint scanner doubles as the home bottom.

In terms of build quality, the MediaPad M5 can compete favourably with the likes of Galaxy Tab S4 and Apple iPads. Notification lights on tablets are becoming rare these days. But the MediaPad M5 has a notification light which you would find useful.

The camera isn’t great – just average especially in low light conditions.

One refreshing thing about the default apps shipped with tablet is that they can be uninstalled. So you are not forced to keep apps you do not need or use. HiCare, Consumer, Amazon Shopping, Outlook can be uninstalled.

You will love using the thump pad which enables you to make quick gestures that activate some functions.

The Huawei MediaPad M5 comes with a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter.

What you may not like

One issue you may possibly run into is that the WiFi and Bluetooth do not work very well when used simultaneously without a drop in WiFi bandwidth. This is because they both use the same antenna. When you are using a Bluetooth device (a headset, for instance) and streaming videos via WiFi, the tablet speed and WiFi data rate drop to some degree. Nevertheless, some people do not experience this problem, we must acknowledge.

No 3.5 mm headphone jack, although it has a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter for headphones.

The virtual navigation bar does not work in landscape mode. You will find it difficult going back when running apps designed to function only in landscape mode. We recommend enabling the off-screen navigation button when using programs that are landscape-specific.

The back of the tablet is excessively smooth and can get slippery. Purchasing a case solves the problem.

Bottom Line

These tablets are a great pick for anyone who needs durable, fast, and responsive slates. Each tablet has its strengths and drawbacks. Your choice may well depend on your budget and need.
